If you setup a new hard drive and install an Operating System on it and it suddenly acts like the hard drive is not there, it may be a loose connection.

If a bootable CD, such a s Knoppix, is not able to read your hard drive, it can have several causes. The list of possibilities below can also be used for troubleshooting hard drives, floppy drives, and CD/DVD drives.

CAUTION: Make sure the power is off and that the PC is disconnected from power. Also be sure to avoid static electricity, or you will need a new PC. Do not force any thing. All parts should easily fit together if they are properly aligned. Sometimes you may have to push or pull harder than you think. Just be careful to make sure any levers or buttons that hold it in place are not overlooked.

* Least likely is that a new hard drive has failed. Try the other options before assuming it is the new hard drive. If all of the below do not work, and it is a new hard drive, contact the manufacturer. New hard drives should include very good instructions for installation and troubleshooting. When in doubt read the instructions.

* Open the case and make sure that all the connections are correct.

* Unplug the power supply connection, make sure there are no bent pins, and plug it in securely.

* Repeat the procedure with the connection to the motherboard, make sure no pins are bent.

* If you have multiple drives, try hooking up just one drive to make sure you can read it.

* Make sure that the power supply, and other components are working correctly. It is possible that another component of the PC has failed.

* If you have another PC available, try connecting it to the other PC. This could point to failure of the power and/or motherboard cables in the original PC.

* If none of the above works, call in professional help. You can also beg a friend or family member to help. If you cannot pay a friend or family member, a good meal, is a nice way to get them to rescue you again.

Windows XP can leave you pulling your hear out trying to delete that undeletable file or folder, search the web high and low, no solution for the dreaded "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk" error could be found...........Until now
Recently I had a program cause a problem with; well I'm not sure exactly what. But it created a file folder that absolutely could not be deleted no matter what I tried. I tried to rename it, to move it, to delete it, from safe mode, from administrator safe mode, nothing worked
I spent hours and hours searching the web trying to find a solution. What I found on the net darkened my hopes of ever getting rid of this folder short of a format and reload of windows.
Not one to give up very easily at all, I starting thinking of ways one might delete files nothing seemed to be of much help until I found out that I could move the file if it was on the same drive, inside its parent folder. Now if the file or folder you need to delete is in your root system folder or on any other partition then your system or root partition, then this fix probably won't work for you. To make it a bit clearer, the file or folder you want to delete must be on the system drive partition, but not in the root of that drive or partition. The reasons why will soon become apparent. Also you must have administrator rights to perform this fix
Ok, what ever folder the target file or folder is in; empty it out, saving all other files to another folder that can be renamed later. Now that you have just the target file or folder inside its parent folder, you can rename the parent folder to what ever you want. I used "Delete Me" just so I didn't make any mistakes.
Now restart windows and boot into safe mode. If you are not sure how to boot into safe mode, a rule of thumb is to restart the system and tap the F8 key as soon as the boot sequence begins, usually until you hear system beeps that signal keyboard errors. By this time the system is booting into safe mode.
When you see the login screen, log in as administrator, the system will continue to boot, usually there will be a message advising you that you are booting into safe mode and asking if you want to continue. Windows XP safe mode desktop is black, so don't worry if you have never been here before, everything is going fine.
Now that you are logged on as the administrator in safe mode follow these steps
1. Open control panel from the start menu
2. Select USER ACCOUNTS from the control panel menu icons
3. Select Create New account from the list of tasks
4. In the new task windows, give the account a two or three letter name, not any real user name. and click the next button
5. Select the LIMITED account feature by selecting the little radio button at the top, and click the create account button at the bottom
6. Close all program windows and restart windows
7. When windows boots you will see the new user id, log in on the new user account that you just created
8. You may get some funny flags and request when you log in , but they are not to worry, let the system finish logging you in and when all activity has finished, restart windows again in safe mode
9. Log in as administrator again
10. Open my documents from the start menu and click the folders icon to open up the left hand panel of the explorer window.
11. Navigate to the file/folder parent folder you want to delete (the one you renamed to something like "Delete Me")
12. Have it selected in the right hand pane of explorer (remember you can only move this file or folder if it is inside the parent folder)
13. From the file menu at the top select edit then select move to folder....
14. When the navigation widow opens, navigate to C:documents and settings new user id new user id documents (new user id is the account name you created) and select the move button
15. Now restart windows normally and log into your normal account
16. Open control panel from the start menu
17. Select user accounts
18. Select change accounts
19. Select the new user account you created
20. Select delete account
21. Select to delete all files, and delete account

Note:Don't forget to restore your original files to their original location after creating a new folder to put them, in the proper location.

* Now delete the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/MountPoints2. This step should be repeated for ALL users on the computer including the built-in Administrator account. Now reboot the computer and you should be able to open the drives.

Error Message : Virtual Memory Is Too Low

Problem :
Error message: "Virtual memory minimum is too low. Windows is increasing the size of the virtual memory paging file."
Solution :
The virtual memory is the space your computer uses when it runs short of RAM memory. The paging file is the place where Windows handles your virtual memory settings. If your computer wants to change it, you should go ahead and let it because XP will adjust the setting to meet the current memory needs. I do not recommend changing these settings manually as Windows can manage the size much more efficiently than the user can. Making your virtual memory setting larger will increase the number of addresses and will make Windows lazy.
Adding more RAM may also be of benefit as this will reduce the need for virtual memory to be used in the first place. For running Windows XP, I suggest at least 384MB. In general, adding more RAM is the most cost effective means of boosting a computer's performance.
I recommend buying quality RAM from a reputable company. Some cheap (unbranded) RAM can on occasion be defective resulting in 'unexplained' crashes or freezes. Brands to look for are Mushkin, Crucial and Kingston.

Cause : This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.
Solution :
1. Start Windows XP with the Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD drive.2. Once you see the "Welcome to setup" message, press the letter 'R' on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.3. Select the Windows installation to be repaired (Administrator password required)4. You will then get a DOS prompt. From here type: chkdsk /p [Enter]5. When that is done type: fixboot [Enter]6. Type: Y at the next prompt [Enter]7. Then type: exit [Enter]8. The system will now reboot into Windows.
If for some reason that didn't work, you can boot to the recovery console (STEP 2)
Type: chkdsk /r [Enter]
When done type: exit [Enter].
This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Open any folder, go to tool option there. (In upper area of every folder has menu, File Edit View Favorites Tools Help)

In "Advanced settings" scroll down and at the bottom there is a option "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" uncheck this and click "ok" for exit.
Next right click on the restricted folder select "Properties" and in Properties window click on tab "Security" (This tab is only visible after you uncheck the option Use simple file sharing. Otherwise this option not available in properties window)
